Katatonia, the Swedish masters of melancholy and purveyors of dark rock/metal are just about to release their ninth studio album, Dead End Kings. Amongst their most poignant and ambitious material work to date, the album was produced by Anders Nystrom and Jonas Renkse themselves, mixed by David Castillo (known well for his prior work with the band, as well as work with Opeth and Bloodbath). After numerous line-up changes over the years, the current line up is more potent, focussed and creatively charged than ever before. Renkse and Nystrom, alongside guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist, are truly at their peak. Renkse’s take on the album? ‘Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level. The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that’s the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It had a little more fire involved. We don’t want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music’. The album is due for release on 27th August and was recorded using our Nexus and Jumbo King Acoustic strings.
